Small but mighty: Tiny “Vlooitjie” Johanna wins gold for Abraham Kriel!

Fourteen-year-old Johanna Ngobene is AKKN’s newest champion, after winning gold at the South African Age Group Games! Johanna has proven her talent as an athlete, taking the national title in the 100m sprint. After her triumph, she didn’t slow down – she’s also been selected to compete as a swimmer against other provinces in Gauteng in March 2025.

The Age Group Games, held in Polokwane this year, is an athletics event for children with special needs. These children are trained in LSEN schools (Learners with Special Educational Needs). Johanna is a pupil at Thusanang Special School in Bela-Bela, where she not only excels academically but also shines on the sports field. She is coached by Mam Ndou, both as an athlete and as a swimmer.

Johanna, who was taken in as a young child by Abraham Kriel, is known as “Vlooitjie” (“Little Flea”) because she was always so small. “In her quiet way, she’s touched our hearts deeply,” says our Annie le Roux. She describes “Vlooitjie” as warm and friendly, always ready to lend a hand, and fond of giving hugs.

Johanna, we are so proud of you! You are an inspiration to us and to the children of South Africa!
