Host Parents

Family time, visiting time, meals and holidays. For an ordinary child, these are memorable moments of good food, laughter and love. But how does it feel to be alone in an children’s home on an Easter weekend, in December or during the holidays?

That is why we invite the public to become part of the Abraham Kriel Children’s Home’s host parent programme. Selected host parents thus get the opportunity to take care of a child who, for various reasons, does not have the privilege of visiting his/her biological parents. Host parents can then stand in as these children’s pamper family.

The host parent programme gives our children the opportunity to be in a different environment than the children’s home. They also gain experience of and exposure to a normal functioning household. Children who experience unforgettable moments with host parents learn how a normal household functions and their behaviour at the children’s home bears witness to this.

As soon as you decide to offer a child the wonderful opportunity of spending special time with your family, the process can begin. Host parents must be approved to take a child into their home:

  • A local social worker, independent of the children’s home, visits the parents.
  • The social worker sends a Form 30 application to the Department of Social Development.
  • The parents go to the local police station to obtain a police clearance certificate themselves.

If they are interested, host parents also have the opportunity to apply for foster care.
