Together on the journey – a social worker’s with a heart for our children
Charnel Oberholzer is a social worker at Abraham Kriel Children’s Home Nylstroom, where she makes a difference every day in the lives of 170 children facing many challenges. Her work is grounded in a deep and genuine care for children, and in her desire to restore hope where it has been lost.
For her, the children’s home is more than just a workplace.
“It is a space where children find safety, structure and new opportunities – a place where they can begin to rebuild their future. To be part of that process is a privilege,” she says.
As a social worker, her role extends far beyond paperwork and reports. She supports children through difficult emotions such as fear, uncertainty and loss, and works purposefully to help rebuild trust. Her focus is to be a safe and steady presence – someone children can turn to, share their stories with, and learn to believe in themselves again.
Charnel’s passion and sense of purpose are clear in her own words, “In 2026, I look forward to leading projects that help children develop practical skills, take responsibility and build confidence, so that they can face their future with hope.”
Although the work can be emotionally demanding, Charnel experiences it as meaningful. “Every challenge contributes to my own growth and reminds me why this work matters. It is the small breakthroughs and quiet victories that mean the most to me.”
On a personal level, she is driven and ambitious, but also aware of the uncertainties that come with new opportunities. Even so, she chooses to move forward, even when the path ahead feels uncertain. She lives with the conviction that every experience brings something of value.
Charnel is guided by a simple principle her parents taught her: “Do not start something and leave it unfinished. Give your best, and God will do the rest.”
Her hope is that every child will come to understand that he or she matters, that their future lies open before them, and that they do not have to walk the road alone.
