When Sanet Basson arrived at Abraham Kriel Children’s Home Nylstroom in March 2017, she had already been exposed to a range of difficult circumstances. Her early childhood had been marked by, among other things, gender-based violence, neglect and emotional trauma – factors that affected her development from a young age.

The children’s home became a place of stability for her.

From the outset, Sanet was in a structured environment where routine, supervision and consistent care formed part of her daily life. The staff at the children’s home not only provided for her basic needs, but also played an active role in her personal development. Through guidance, discipline and sustained support, these relationships had a meaningful influence on her over time.

During her teenage years, she faced a further challenge when she developed a brachial cyst. The condition caused ongoing discomfort and affected both her wellbeing and academic focus. The situation was further complicated by limited access to treatment within the public healthcare system.

Despite this, the children’s home supported her throughout by helping to coordinate her medical care, providing emotional support and prioritising her academic progress. With the help of external support, she was ultimately able to receive the necessary treatment shortly before her final matric exams.

Her dream of studying education remained a central focus throughout. The staff at the children’s home recognised her academic potential and supported her consistently, with a view to further study and independence. Sanet successfully completed her schooling and gained admission to higher education.

She is currently completing her Bachelor of Education (BEd) at the University of Pretoria and has already begun her teaching career at Laerskool Nylstroom in Limpopo.

Her career choice reflects the influence of the adults who supported her during her time at the children’s home. Their role extended beyond immediate care and made a lasting contribution to shaping her future.
