At Abraham Kriel Children’s Home Nylstroom, the meaning of “home” is built every day through consistency: a warm bed, clean clothes, soap to wash with, caring house parents, a daily routine that brings stability, and a warm meal served with love.

Every day, we provide food for the 170 children in our care, as well as the 30 staff members who look after them. That means 200 people, three meals a day, every day. In other words: 600 meals a day and more than 18 000 meals a month.

As a children’s home, we are deeply grateful for the state subsidy we receive to help care for our children. However, when the full cost of caring for each child is taken into account – safe accommodation, clothing, school fees, transport, therapy, medical and daily care – the subsidy in reality covers less than 10% of each child’s food costs.

We need help to make up that shortfall. We need help to feed our future.

The average cost of one meal per child is R60. To keep one child’s tummy full for a week costs R1 260, and for a full month approximately R5 040.

For a child, your financial contribution becomes something immediate and tangible: the certainty of a meal, the strength to build a better future, and the knowledge that he or she has not been forgotten.
