We celebrate 10-year partnership with Dischem Montana

2024 marks a decade since a chance encounter blossomed into a beautiful partnership between Abraham Kriel Children’s Home Nylstroom (AKKN) and Dischem Montana.

Kim Hall, store manager at Dischem Montana, recalls the day she met an employee of the home while she was getting her car serviced. On hearing about the home’s work, Kim was inspired to help arrange a monthly stipend for use at the store. “Every month, in the first week or on the first day, our friends from AKKN come to the store to purchase their necessities,” Kim says.

These necessities range from medication to basics like toilet paper and deodorant. “When they come in, we assist them with their shopping. The supervisors know exactly who they are,” Kim adds. “It is really rewarding to see how we make a difference in our local community.”

The stipend is funded by the Dischem Loyalty Programme, which has an impressive 75% participation rate among Dischem Montana customers. The programme enables Dischem to sponsor various charities and to uplift those in need – like the children at AKKN – who would otherwise be dependent on state resources. “It wasn’t until I visited the home that I fully understood the extent of the need,” Kim reflects. “I always try to imagine myself in those children’s shoes.”

The children’s gratitude spills over to energise the staff. “Every year we receive a cake from Abraham Kriel,” says Kim. “And every year, I get a beautiful thank-you note and Christmas card from the children. You can really see how much it means to them.”

Gerda van der Merwe affirms Kim’s words. “Our partnership with Dischem has been a tremendous source of support,” she says. “The assistance they provide us helps us keep our kids healthy, clean, and well cared for, so they can feel truly loved.”

With special thanks to Maria Robin and Kim Hall of Dischem.
