AKKN’s school leavers’ function 2024: A fun “Forest fantasy”

Each year, the children leaving school have the opportunity to attend the AKKN School Leavers’ Function at the children’s home. This function is designed to make every school leaver feel special. It is especially important for our children in LSEN schools (learners with special educational needs). Children at LSEN schools do not have the chance to attend a matric farewell, so this evening is particularly precious for them!

The staff at Abraham Kriel organise the function, which forms part of a formal event. Just like at a matric farewell, these children also wear beautiful dresses and smart suits, and they also have a “Big Brag” before the reception begins. They walk down a red carpet and get the opportunity to take photos with their brothers and sisters in the children’s home. This gives them their “Hollywood moment,” allowing them to feel like stars!

We specifically budget for the school leavers’ function, but we rely on donations for the children’s gifts and additional funds for the reception, to make the event as special as possible for them.

This year, our school leavers’ function was held on 15 October. The children had the chance to ride in a donkey cart to the red carpet, where their house parents accompanied them to the photo corner – a cherished part of their memories. After the “Big Brag,” the children proceeded to the reception, where everything was decorated according to the “Forest Fantasy” theme. Each social worker had the opportunity to introduce the children with their “Once upon a time” story.

We hope that our school leavers will always remember this evening as a highlight in their lives!
