New programme uses creativity as a catalyst for healing and growth

At the Abraham Kriel Children’s Home in Nylstroom, creativity has become a powerful catalyst for healing, growth, and self-discovery. Under the guidance of Elize Sauer, one of the  home’s social workers,  a new arts-and-crafts group is helping children unlock their creative potential while developing essential life skills such as self-awareness, confidence, and emotional resilience.

Once a month, the children gather to paint, draw, and create – activities that go far beyond artistic expression. For many, art offers a safe outlet to communicate emotions and experiences that are difficult to express in words. “It’s remarkable to see how their confidence grows as they discover their abilities and begin to view themselves in a more positive light,” says Sauer.

The sessions also nurture teamwork and empathy. As children share materials, exchange ideas, and celebrate one another’s work, they learn cooperation and develop a sense of belonging – vital for young people who have faced adversity early in life.

While each session includes some structure, there is only one guiding rule: enjoy the process. “Art isn’t just about creating something beautiful,” Sauer reflects. “It’s about realising that beauty exists within each of us.”
