Micayla bakes her way to a bright future

What began with her first attempts at baking during her school years led Micayla Jenkins, a former resident of Abraham Kriel Children’s Home Nylstroom, to pursue professional training in patisserie. This year, she earned several qualifications and is well on her way to finding her place in the hospitality industry.

Micayla came to live at the children’s home in 2019. It was during her school years that she discovered her love of cooking, and baking in particular. What began as an interest gradually developed into a passion she hoped to turn into a career.

“For me, baking is about so much more than simply making something delicious. I love being creative, making something with my own hands and seeing how happy it makes other people,” she says.

This passion led her to The International Hotel School, where she approached her studies with great dedication. This year, she successfully earned her QCTO qualification, an École Ducasse certificate and her qualification in patisserie. “The journey wasn’t always easy. There were challenges, but I kept working hard and trying to improve. Finally receiving my qualifications, especially in patisserie, means an incredible amount to me.”

Micayla now hopes to expand her knowledge and gain practical experience. Her ultimate goal is to establish her own business, where she can express her creativity and play a part in making people’s special occasions even more memorable.

Looking back on her journey since 2019, she is particularly grateful to those who supported her and believed in her abilities.

“I’m proud of what I’ve achieved, but I know there’s still so much I want to learn. I’m excited about what lies ahead and want to make the most of every opportunity to keep growing. Finishing my studies marks the beginning of a career in which I can put my talent and love of baking to good use,” Micayla concludes.
