To many people at Abraham Kriel Children’s Home Nylstroom, Annie le Roux is better known as “Anna Patat”. The nickname reflects her helpful, loyal and calm nature, as well as her willingness to step in wherever she is needed.

“I became part of the story of Abraham Kriel Children’s Home Nylstroom in October 2003. Over the past two decades, I have taken on a variety of roles and new responsibilities, while working behind the scenes to keep things running.”

Over the years, Annie has organised events, handled marketing and finances, helped to arrange functions and supported many people. Her greatest contribution, however, lies not only in the tasks she performs, but also in the way she supports people, notices them and makes them feel valued.

“Yes, everyone can be replaced in a position, but no one can replace the unique contribution you make as a person,” she says with a smile.

According to Gerda van der Merwe, chief executive officer of Abraham Kriel Children’s Home, “Anna Patat” is more than just a nickname. “It has become an identity – a name people associate with safety, support and loyalty.”

After many years of service, Annie looks back on a journey in which she has not only done her job, but has also made a genuine difference. “Every day, I share in the stories of our staff and our children, and it is close to my heart to help carry their burdens during difficult times.”

There will always be only one “Anna Patat”: the woman with the gentle heart, the strong shoulders, the ever-smiling eyes and the remarkable ability to make others feel valued.
