Taylor van Staden believes a difficult start does not have to determine your future

Taylor van Staden grew up in difficult circumstances and was later admitted to Abraham Kriel Children’s Home Nylstroom on the recommendation of a social worker.

“At first, it was difficult for me to understand why it had to happen. I did not realise that this change would eventually become one of the most important turning points in my life,” Taylor says.

Over time, she adjusted to the routine of the children’s home. For the first time, she could simply be a child: focus on her schoolwork, make friends and get to know herself better.

Taylor says people often feel sorry for children who grow up in a children’s home, but her own experience was very different. “For me, it was a place of safety, growth and new opportunities. I learnt so much there and left a stronger, more independent person.”

The support did not end when she completed matric and left the Children’s Home. She continued to receive assistance, including help in securing a safe place to live and the opportunity to continue her studies.

Today, Taylor has a degree in Education and works as a high school teacher. She is also active in sport, does CrossFit, takes part in competitions and coaches at FitRise360.

“I was given the opportunity to study, pursue a career I love, work with children and inspire others through sport and coaching,” she says. For Taylor, this is proof that a person’s past does not have to determine their future: “My story is not defined by the circumstances I came from, but by the choices I have made and the path I chose to follow.”

Her story shows how important it is for children to have safety, support and people around them who help them see new possibilities.
