School leavers embark on the next chapter of their journey
Eleven school leavers from Abraham Kriel Children’s Home Nylstroom were honoured at a special farewell function held at Tsekama on 15 October. The event was inspired by the theme of this year’s talent evening: “The world is our stage!” Each school leaver represented a different country, and the venue was transformed into an airport to symbolise the young people’s journey into adulthood.
From little flags bearing clues strung up on lengths of string to specially constructed wooden doors, every detail required careful planning. With the help of Kobus Swanepoel, the husband of one of the children’s home’s house parents, an aeroplane was even built for the occasion.
The school leavers arrived in style and were welcomed with singing and great excitement. “As the boys and girls came up the stairs, everyone let out a spontaneous ‘Wow!’” It was a moment that made us all proud,” recalls Annie.
After receiving their boarding passes, the school leavers made their way through the departure gate to the aeroplane.
The Rev. Wolhuter opened the proceedings, after which Sonika Cornelius, Tshwantso Matshabi, Maria Venter and Charnel Oberholzer, all social workers at the children’s home, shared words of encouragement with the young people.
The formal programme later gave way to music and dancing, with staff members joining in the festivities.
Gerda van der Merwe, Chief Executive of the children’s home, wished the school leavers well for their upcoming final examinations and encouraged them to face the future with courage and confidence.
“Our school leavers are now on the threshold of a new chapter in their lives. The children’s home wishes them every success as they embrace the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead,” Gerda concluded.
