The 2026 school year is here!

For the 170 children at Abraham Kriel Children’s Home, Nylstroom, it means early mornings again, school bells, homework and big dreams.

But for most of them it also brings uncertainty:

    “Do my shoes still fit?”

“Is this shirt not a bit tight?”

    “Will the others like me?”

“Do I have everything I need?”

Our children do not want to be different… They just want to fit in and belong. They want to be part of the group and, like every other child, go to school with pride and confidence.

Our goal is that every Abraham Kriel child starts the new school year spick and span – neat, equipped and full of courage.

To make this possible, we need:

    • School clothes
    • School shoes
    • Stationery
    • School bags
    • Lunch boxes
    • Water bottles

Spick & span and ready for school

The school year starts for Jannie with a shock he can’t ignore –
His biggest fear is classmates laughing as he walks through the door.
Barefoot days for bigger boys are finished, gone and done,
And overnight there’s frantic fuss to find new shoes to run.

Because the thing with boys, you see, is how they grow so fast –
Yesterday a size six fit, today that time has passed.
To cram his feet in smaller shoes – well no, that won’t be right,
How can a boy with curled-up toes keep his focused bright?

Perhaps a cough put on for show could keep him home a day,
So Aunty Gerda, quick as quick, can dash and go and pay.
But budgets here must balance out, the numbers can’t just skate –
And buying size eights for him alone will make the sums miscalculate.

So what to do with this big-footed muddle he’s in?
Could he press another child’s button and hope to somehow win?
A brick upon his head won’t stop his feet from growing more.
Perhaps he’ll ask a friend for help – that might be worth a try, for sure.

A few rand is all it takes from you, a small and kindly part,
For Jannie to arrive at school with polished size eights and heart.
To step into the year with confidence, with energy and zeal,
Spick and span on day one – only his best, the real deal.
