Coffee with Kwêla: Visit to Abraham Kriel Childrne’s Home

The Kwêla team was recently on the hunt for the 2024 “Town of the Year.” With Modimolle on the list of finalists, the team visited the Abraham Kriel Children’s Home on 5 June. Established in 1902, the children’s home has been a part of the Modimolle community for decades.

Although the children’s home is over a century old, its coffee shop is brand new. Host Andre Weideman and his team were very impressed with the coffee shop, which was established in 2019. “They wanted to know why the coffee shop is a special place for us,” says Gerda van der Merwe, executive director of Abraham Kriel. “It is special because it gives the children an opportunity to grow and develop, and it also creates an opportunity to bring the community to the premises so they can see what is happening at the children’s home.” The coffee shop thus serves as a bridge between the children and their community and is an important part of life in Modimolle. No wonder the children were “very excited and proud” to share the coffee shop with the Kwêla team! To see more of the town and the coffee shop, watch Kwêla’s “Town of the Year” episode on 16 June.
