We bid farewell to our dear Gugu after 36 years
At the end of February, the Abraham Kriel Children’s Home said goodbye to Tannie Liesbet – or Gugu, as everyone knew her.
Tobekani Elizabeth Makwela dedicated her life to the Abraham Kriel Children’s Home in Nylstroom from 11 May 1988, serving as a general assistant. For 36 years, she cared for this community daily – comforting, protecting, and loving the children in her care. She ensured that Huis Maroela was always spotless. Not a single cupboard was ever in disarray, and everything was neatly in its place. She took great pride in welcoming and guiding guests and donors.
For Tannie Liesbet, her work was a privilege. She approached her tasks with dedication and treated her colleagues and everyone around her with the utmost respect.
She not only found a special place in the hearts of the children of Huis Maroela but also in those of her colleagues, who worked alongside her day in and day out. Everyone speaks of dear Gugu with the highest praise: “Her strength inspires me. She did her work with joy and gratitude and never arrived at work with a negative attitude. I learned patience from her,” says Christa Hoffmann, old colleague of Liesbet.
One thing is certain: her heart was devoted to children. Gugu would also feed hungry children in her neighbourhood, knowing how great the need was, and she never hesitated to help.
The hundreds of children who passed through her caring hands were truly blessed to have had her in their lives.
Dearest Gugu, we wish you rest, peace, and good health in your retirement.
