A voice of hope and compassion
Portia is a social worker at the Abraham Kriel Children’s Home Nylstroom, and for her it is far more than just a profession – it is an important part of who she is.
With empathy, patience, and compassion, she accompanies children each day who need safety, support, and hope. She does not see our children as cases in need of care, but as unique individuals with potential, talents, and dreams. “These children are not just ‘placements’ or ‘cases’. They are dreamers, artists, comedians, and young people with incredible potential,” she says.
Although the work is emotionally demanding, she would not choose a different path. “It is some of the most challenging work imaginable, but also deeply meaningful. These children teach me every day about courage, resilience, and the strength of the human spirit.”
Portia also believes that genuine care must go hand in hand with wisdom and healthy boundaries. “I have learned that compassion needs boundaries in order to be sustainable. You cannot pour from an empty cup,” she says. “I am not here to be a rescuer, but to be an ally – someone who walks alongside a child, offers guidance, and believes in them until they can believe in themselves again.”
Through her dedication and passion, Portia makes a difference in our children’s lives every day and brings hope for their future.
