Cassey Stehouwer, a former resident of Abraham Kriel Children’s Home Nylstroom, is a remarkable example of how stability, support and hard work can change the course of a young person’s life.

She arrived at the children’s home in February 2019, and the transition was difficult at first. Cassey is the second eldest of four children, and two of her siblings still live at the home.

“I had mixed feelings about my placement,” Cassey recalls. “The circumstances made the transition emotionally challenging.”

Over time, Abraham Kriel Children’s Home Nylstroom became a place of safety, structure and growth for her. Cassey says the guidance and values she received there played an important role in both her personal and academic development: “The children’s home had a profound influence on my development and helped me build strong values, discipline and a clear sense of purpose.”

In October 2025, Cassey had the opportunity to take part in an Academic Achievers tour abroad. The experience broadened her horizons and strengthened her ambitions for the future.

This year, she began a new chapter and is now studying law at Akademia in Pretoria. She hopes to use her studies to make a difference in the lives of others. “I hope that one day I can use the law to help children and young people facing difficult circumstances,” says Cassey.

With confidence, discipline and determination, Cassey is now looking to the future.
