South Africa’s child protection system is under enormous pressure. In March 2025, around 225 000 foster care grants were paid per month. This is a clear indication of the large number of children who are not growing up within a traditional family setting, but are reliant on alternative care. At the Abraham Kriel Children’s Home in Nylstroom, it is our mandate and responsibility to create a stable, structured home for children who would otherwise be without a safe place to belong. Here, they can recover physically and emotionally, and have the opportunity to develop their full potential.

In practice, this means that we provide each of the 170 children in our care with the following:

• Three healthy meals a day.
• Basic care and access to medical services.
• Spiritual care and growth.
• Educational support and development.
• Professional therapy and emotional support.
• A safe, structured environment with continuous supervision.

The state subsidy covers only about 30% of the actual cost of caring for a child. The remaining 70% is raised through initiatives we launch, as well as monthly donations and sponsorships. Ultimately, it is this funding that enables our children’s home to care for each child and to finance and manage our programmes sustainably. We see the impact of our work at the Abraham Kriel Children’s Home in Nylstroom in the following success stories:

Sanet Basson overcame significant health challenges during her time at the children’s home and went on to earn her teaching degree at the University of Pretoria.

Gavin Smith is a former resident and a talented rugby player. With the support of donors, he travelled to Barcelona, Spain, with the AVS under-19B Bokkieweek Team.

Cassey Stehouwer  en Chris Richter successfully completed their matric final examinations in 2025. This year, they will continue their studies at Akademia and Bo-Karoo Opleiding, respectively.

Thanks to the ongoing support we receive each month from ordinary people, our children can keep working towards a better future.
