A button of hope for winter, by Annie le Roux
As the days grow shorter and the nights draw in, winter makes its presence felt. An icy wind blows around the corners of the children’s home, the last autumn leaves drift to the ground, and we pull our coats a little tighter to keep out the cold.
Then, on a cold morning, when you go to button up your coat, you notice it: a button is missing.
Life can be like that too. Over time, some of the buttons that hold us together – hope, courage, patience, faith, or the knowledge that someone cares – can come loose or fall away. When those buttons are missing, life’s cold seasons feel so much colder.
For many of our children, these buttons of hope are also very practical: a warm meal, a winter coat, a blanket, or a pair of shoes to protect little feet from the winter cold. These may seem like simple things, but for our children they can mean the difference between despair and hope.
This winter, we are reminded that caring does not always come in grand gestures. Sometimes it is found in the smallest acts: a donated item of clothing, a shared meal, a kind word or a helping hand. That is how a button of hope is sewn into someone else’s life.
May this winter be an opportunity for each of us to strengthen the thread of caring, to live with gratitude, and to share warmth with others. Because sometimes the smallest gesture is the very button of hope that helps someone make it through the winter.
May hope, caring and gratitude stay firmly fastened this winter.
